Thanks Chris -
I don't have Notepad - I'm using Page Spinner on a Mac - and though I  
can change the character set in the meta tag, I don't see a way to  
change the encoding.  Just changing the meta tag gives me a bunch of  
question marks.

I got it to work by starting with the home page as a template and  
then adding the content to that rather than my original products  
page.  I still don't know why it was happening - but the source of  
the problem seems to not be the MS Word document - seems to somehow  
be the English products page.

I wanted to understand this because I've agreed to translate into  
three other languages - will now be reading up on character sets and  
encodings.  I appreciate all of the help.
