Okay.

I have uncovered the problem and now seek advice on if this is correct 
behaviour or a new IE7 bug.

what happens is that if you include an undimensioned div inside a 
floated div (that doesn't have a width set) then IE7 makes the contained 
div only wide enough for it's content.

all other browsers appear to make it the same width as the parent, with 
variations.

My test case:
