Which DB Engine are you using? This make a big difference sometimes. For MS SQL try "contains" http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/tsqlref/ts_ca-co_2y2h.asp (I don't remember if this requires full text search to be on or not.)
