This is one of the assumptions I'd wish to be true. The main issue is in 
the way how screen readers try to present the information from the 
browser, even with methods they don't know how to handle.

Graceful degrading won't save you until the screen readers either 
ignore/turn off the JS in the host environment or learn how to react on 
DOM changes and announce more events.
