[thelist] Special Characters & Meta Tags

Hi,

Does anyone have some links to any resources dealing with the use of Special
Characters in Meta Tags?

We have a client who uses a few French terms in their website including
their organisation name and I need to figure if the Meta Tags should
contain:

- CHAÎNE d'ECOSSE or
- CHAINE d'ECOSSE

Will the search engines equate a 'I' to being the same as 'Î'?

Further, I doubt anyone based in the UK who is looking for them will bother
to type an 'Î' as part of a search term so is that reason enough to simply
keep the meta tags to regular UK English characters? This sounds easy
enough but then what if the search engines are looking for an exact match
between Meta Tags and copy in the body of the site?

Kind regards,

Chris Dempsey
