there's no reason anything needs to be installed on *your* machine for its network traffic to be monitored. a lot depends on the type of network, of course, but anything that enters or leaves your network connection can be touched by monitoring software or hardware.

it's also possible for a network administrator to install anything they want on your machine, without your knowledge.

of course, if *you're* the network administrator . . .
