The resolution-independent web is nigh, and at that point you may decide to
use 200 DPI images (for example) vs. 96 DPI images so that your page looks
sharper for high-DPI users.

For the above to makes sense, note that your image size in picas, CSS
pixels, etc. will remain the same.  CSS pixels resolve to device pixels
right now, but in the future CSS pixels will resolve to multiple device
pixels (i.e. one CSS pixels might equal 1.8 device pixels on some high-DPI
monitor).
