[thelist] batch image processing

Hi all,

I am faced with this problem: I need to add a layer with a number to a
directory of image files.
They are all PNGs. The number is 1 for the first image, 2 for the second, etc.
I have used IrfanView and added the Directory Index for each file.
Looks like this "[1/23]", "[2/23], etc.

when I really just want "1", "2", etc.

I know I could write a PHP script to process this, but is there a
program that can do this?
