Thanks for the info, Greg, and I'd be more than happy if 2.0 makes it
easier to work without VS, but I'm confused: the server I'm working on
is set to 1.1, and I'm using codebehind which I did not compile in
advance. and I've never touched Visual Studio.

are you sure about all this?
