I'm thinking I might still be right, do you have a link to the code? 

Have you tried putting a 'float' on the container div too?

Unfortunately, this causes the container div to collapse even further
upwards :(

IE7... I don't have the facility currently to test IE6 (partly because the
thought of that scares me)
