I've had the same symptoms, and never did find out what the problem
was.  Googling it found some other people reporting similar problems,
but no solution.  I finally gave up and bound the field in question
to a HiddenField, and then used event handlers to set/get the DDL's
SelectedValue.

Other times it worked fine.  It seemed to have to do with the data
types involved but that's just a hunch.

I don't see anything wrong with your code.  I think it's one of those
Micro$oft "It's a feature, not a bug" situations.
