Depends on how complex the workbooks are - are they pure data dumps,  
do they have calculations, or do they make use of Excel's more  
advanced features (like conditional formatting, VLOOKUP and pivot  
tables)?

If it's just the first two, most other spreadsheeting packages (1-2-3,  
OpenOffice, Apple Numbers etc) should open the workbooks with little  
problem (with the usual caveats about not saving in *the* latest  
version).
