Good points Joel. Obviously setting expectations clearly from the start leaves no room for quibbling and also lets the client know you're serious about getting things done (and getting paid).
The only exception I've found is larger organisations (50+ staff) with established accounts departments and payment processes. Some times with these companies I've needed to find out early how they run and then work in with their timeframes.
(Interestingly enough, the other web development companies I've freelanced for turn out to be the promptest payers :) )
