Strange. I tested your file with an "html" vs. an "xhtml" on win2K,
winXP, Vista and Ubuntu.

Firefox: visual change on all OSes, and reports expected change in MIME
type in page info.
Safari and Chrome: visual change (XP, Vista)
Opera: no square/bracket either way, but reports expected change in MIME
type in page info.

FWIW: I have practiced this form of "MIME type jumping" as part of
regular compatibility testing for years...
