Amen to this. The CCK was tediously painful to set up, one form element at a
time, so I gave up and created my own.
I am going to check out webform.

Not "may" want to use. You ABSOLUTELY want to use this and not CCK.
Unless you have bizarre requirements, then webform was made for precisely
what you describe.
