[thelist] Hosting?

Normally I would host in the same country because I don't want to worry
about currency conversion. But there was a story about Ralph Lauren and
laughable DMCA takedown notices that has been making me reconsider.

In case you don't know, The Digital Millennium Copyright Act provides the
legal basis for content creators to order takedowns of copyright infringing
content. This would be great, except it is being abused, as with the case of
the Ralph Lauren photoshop disaster
(http://pixel8ed.me/2009/11/22/ralph-lauren-abusing-womens-self-esteem-and-d
mca/). Working at NBC in anti-piracy I saw what a thin line it was between
use and abuse of DMCA takedown notices.

But the DMCA is an American Law, and while US companies may be quick to
cave, I would hope other countries would have more common sense when it
comes to fair use.

Hi Krystian,

I thought the whole point of this web-thingie was that I didn't have to care
about country of location!

;-)

(I don't usually need real-time phone support.)

My first host was physically located in Australia. When Telstra (ick)
bought them out I switched to a host in the US (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).

But yes, you are correct, some folks may care where the host is located if
they need either physical server access or better phone support.

Cheers,
RonL.
