I had also heard this in the past,maybe 4-5 years ago, but hadn't re-explored Magento since.

My customer wants to go with PayPal Payments Advanced for various reasons, the main one being that they have a swipe device in the works. That seems to eliminate Drupal and fringes Zen-Cart. He also frowned at widgets such as Google Checkout (not professional...).  An then there's "PayPal is recommending Magento" thing.

I contacted hostgator asking about Magento and their feedback mirrored what you said.  I am double-checking with them - options for monitoring this account as well as moving it to a separate VPS if it piles up.

Resource intensive - where is this problem going to show its ugly face? Load average impacting other accounts? Other?

This was supposed to be a slam-dunk type of project, add paypal buy now buttons and go home at noon; it's become an extraordinarily research intensive trial and error effort. Including time spent already, I've easily doubled the budget.
