From evolt at taracleveland.com Wed Jun 14 12:28:57 2006 From: evolt at taracleveland.com (Tara Cleveland) Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2006 13:28:57 -0400 Subject: [DesDev] working on design Message-ID: <4321688F-15F4-4944-BF95-56CC151C86E9@taracleveland.com> Hi All, Just to let you all know why I haven't said a word since opening the design entry discussion weeks ago... On top of being away for the last 3 weeks, for some reason that I'm trying to work out (thanks dean!), I haven't been getting my desdev mail. So I've been sitting frustrated that no one has been replying or discussing the design entries. Imagine my surprise when I looked at the archives! Anyway, I'm working on making some modifications to my entry based on some of the comments, so I'll let you all know when they're done (hopefully very soon) and I'll write up a bit about what changes were made and why I made them. Cheers, Tara From evolt at taracleveland.com Wed Jun 14 15:13:32 2006 From: evolt at taracleveland.com (Tara Cleveland) Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2006 16:13:32 -0400 Subject: [DesDev] working on design Message-ID: <08D82F0D-E10D-4449-83CE-30B6454AE71B@taracleveland.com> Hi All, Okay... well this is a quick bit of changes... because I'd like some feedback before I put hours and hours into changes. I haven't checked it on different browsers but it should be pretty much the same. If not, let me know. I got rid of the curve. I tried doing the cube step downs but it looked terrible, so I just did a squared-off corner. I think, after having played around with the header a whole bunch, that if we can't agree on one or the other as the "best" one, I'll put out my PSD files and get someone else to play around with it and see if one of you can come up with something. Having thought about the issue of the article/author information box, I think that the best solution might be to use some ajax/DHTML niftiness on it - like in Martin's design, where tabs drop down. That way it's not a box on the side that causes layout issues and it's also not a big area (without terribly important information) that is a barrier between the title and the main article content. However, I have no idea how to do it. Martin said a long time ago that he'd help me do some of the nifty tabbed down stuff like on his design, but he hasn't been around on #evolt today, so I'm gonna put this out there, and y'all can just imagine that if you clicked on it, the article/author info would drop down. http://taracleveland.com/evolt/HTML/weo-changes/styleguide.html Cheers, Tara From martin at uckwa.org Wed Jun 14 17:55:34 2006 From: martin at uckwa.org (Martin Burns) Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2006 23:55:34 +0100 Subject: [DesDev] working on design In-Reply-To: <08D82F0D-E10D-4449-83CE-30B6454AE71B@taracleveland.com> References: <08D82F0D-E10D-4449-83CE-30B6454AE71B@taracleveland.com> Message-ID: <5BAC3824-5D53-430A-9E49-8BEEC1E0E3A3@uckwa.org> On 14 Jun 2006, at 21:13, Tara Cleveland wrote: > However, I have no idea how to do it. Header needs to be thinner now there isn't the curve radius to take into account imo, but definitely better. Maybe a *teeny* bit of rounding might work on the corner, but what do I know... At the moment, I'm up to my eyes in m'dayjob, and apparently don't have SSH out anyway, so apologies. The squared off corner looks fine to me, the only thing that I notice is that the evolt logo looks a bit lost in a sea of blue. Perhaps the header could be made a little bit shorter? Other than that, it all looks good. Mike's suggestion to make a littler curve piqued my curiosity, so I tried it... It's just a jpg. Curve still too big ;-) Just a wee rounded-off corner is ideal - maybe 10px-20px radius? And I'm going to say this one more time, then shut up about it: Fixed Width better than Liquid, especially where there's no maximum width of content columns, because it lets you design to a grid: http://www.subtraction.com/archives/2004/1231_grid_computi.php Cheers Martin -- > Spammers: Send me email -> yumyum at easyweb.co.uk to train my filter > http://www.nuclearelephant.com/projects/dspam/ Sell Cloth Nappies from your website: http://www.purpur.co.uk/announcing-purpur-associates From neuro at well.com Fri Jun 16 21:33:40 2006 From: neuro at well.com (William Anderson) Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2006 03:33:40 +0100 Subject: [DesDev] Design changes In-Reply-To: <0063E05F-2BBA-46EF-B1AD-3C740308228F@taracleveland.com> References: <0063E05F-2BBA-46EF-B1AD-3C740308228F@taracleveland.com> Message-ID: <44936A04.5050902@well.com> Tara Cleveland wrote: > [snip] > > http://taracleveland.com/evolt/HTML/weo-changes/styleguide.html I've said it before, I'll say it again; there's way too much space used at the top with the logo and nav. "The winner will be decided by Evolt's Design and Development group, in consultation with theforum and Evolt's sysadmins" Since no one else is moving this along... I'll take up the reins even though I probably shouldn't 'cause I've got a design in the running (just to mix metaphors). I know that there have been several further suggestions to tweak my designs, but I also know we could go on for years tweaking, without ever having accomplished anything. So I'm gonna stop making any changes until some kind of decision has been made. Then we can tweak whichever design gets picked a little more if needed. What we need to accomplish is a recommendation for a design to theforum. There appear to be 2 - well two versions of the one... so I suppose 3 - designs to choose from. Let's take an official vote and decide on a design - no more tweaks suggested - this is a VOTE. 1. Martin's design at: http://weo.easyweb.co.uk/ 2.
