I saw a chance to upgrade our operating system from Debian 3 to 4 (sarge to etch), putting us within reach of the MySQL 5 and PHP5 upgrades people have been hoping for recently (required by the latest and greatest Drupal and MediaWiki versions), and 3. it's cheaper! $44/month instead of $69/month I acted fast because there were only two of them available at that price (they're both gone now http://www.theplanet.com/servers/outlet.aspx ) and I didn't want to miss out on the deal! I'd like to migrate us onto this new server and then discontinue the old one, so we end up with an O/S upgrade and a discount going forward! But I certainly don't want the migration to this new server to disrupt the new projects Erika has spearheaded recently, or delay any of the progress being made toward a new theme, so if necessary we can keep both servers running for a couple months, but I'd like to ditch the old one sooner rather than later, so we're not paying more, instead of less, for too long :-) The new server is also a low-end Intel Celeron, has the same storage: 80 gigs, the same RAM: 1Gig and the same bandwidth: 1500 GB/month They are currently wiping the drive and installing Debian etch. I'll give everyone login info as soon as I have it. -dave From john at userfrenzy.com Tue Oct 14 12:50:52 2008 From: john at userfrenzy.com (John Handelaar) Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2008 18:50:52 +0100 Subject: [Finance] Server upgrade In-Reply-To: <7BA053533B1640179DD53F27F09DC44B@cylon> References: <7BA053533B1640179DD53F27F09DC44B@cylon> Message-ID: <86f32b920810141050t945aca8m63109d1cbce8c662@mail.gmail.com> 2008/10/14 David Kaufman : > Hi all, > > I've just ordered a new server from theplanet.com (evolt's hosting > provider) Well, OK then. Decision-making sans committees FTW. Shall I trick it out? Dean? William? Decision-making sans committees FTW. FTW? Sorry, it did feel sot of "wrong" to take any action without discussing it first on the finance and sysadmin lists, but it seemed that time was of the essence, and after thinking about it, I decided that replacing the server with an equivalent, but less expensive server was not a decision that required much debate... Perhaps I was wrong, though. I hadn't even considered *not* staying with Debian. But Ubuntu Hardy LTS looks sweet... -dave From martin at easyweb.co.uk Wed Oct 15 13:23:36 2008 From: martin at easyweb.co.uk (Martin Burns) Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2008 19:23:36 +0100 Subject: [Finance] Server upgrade In-Reply-To: References: <7BA053533B1640179DD53F27F09DC44B@cylon> <86f32b920810141050t945aca8m63109d1cbce8c662@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <6D7295F2-7893-4F78-93AE-42A87760400D@easyweb.co.uk> On 14 Oct 2008, at 23:04, David Kaufman wrote: >> Well, OK then. Nah you did the right thing. And on the $150 install fee, we make it back in a few months anyway.
