Hey Jeff,

Sorry, but this is Zope restriction on object names, as the . is used for a 
reserved namespace (and isn't valid at all when using authentication 
systems such as LDAP, Kerberos, Unix passwd, etc...).

One workaround I often use for people with more exotic usernames is to have 
a separate display name. I don't know if this is really worth the effort on 
the project wiki.
