Instead of history.back()
why don't you redirect them and append a querystring to
the page. In asp I'd do it like this

' do database stuff
response.redirect "first.asp?done=yes"

then on the original page first.asp

if request.querystring("done")="yes" then
 ' populate page with new data
end if
