Not much help, I'm afraid but both Firefox 2x and 3x on Linux have no 
trouble with a quick testcase I hacked up:

This is strictly a JavaScript implementation, however. Maybe the anomaly 
is triggered by your use of PHP..? Some more detail on the code you use 
would be helpful.
