[Theforum] Corporate sponsorship?

Hi list,

Please forgive a lurker jumping in with a suggestion that's probably already
been made, but it's been buzzing round my head for a couple of days now.

Would it be possible, or even worth-trying-but-don't-hold-your-breath, to
get some level of corporate sponsorship for meo, in the form of software
licenses, hardware, hosting, cash, bandwidth provision, etc etc?

Surely we can convince a few companies that there's a benefit in providing
these hugely expensive and complicated environments for free to a pool of
developers? The best method I can come up with right now is to approach it
with a similar mindset to Microsoft's academic pricing - it's like drug
dealing, the first hit is on the house :-)

I suppose the downside is that most of the stuff is open source - but might
it be possible to replace "corporate sponsorship" with "a hundred bucks a
month from the Apache Group" or something?

I'm sure there are hundreds of reasons why this won't work, but I thought it
was worth tossing out - any port in a storm...

Cheers
Jon
