Hhhm, as you can change an articles state, it's author, and send email it 
looks like most things should be covered...
The only thing I can't immediately find is how an admin could send custom 
feedback to the author... preset messages are no problem though.

No, but they can only be triggered by transitioning from one state to the 
next, and the roles who are allowed to perform these transitions CAN be 
restricted, so I don't think that should be a problem.

Wow... whasat? it's big.

The main difference is that in this setup the actions are attached to a state, 
while the Drupal workflow attaches the action to the transition between 2 
states, which allows easier diagramming of the workflow.

I should add that I tried the current setup, and it's actually not that bad. 
As a regular user I cannot aprove my own post, and the process was pretty 
transparent.
I would change 2 things though:
The 25 word minimum req didn't work, I had to put in about 40 words before it 
accepted it.
The checkboxes to choose who can view or edit my post should remain hidden 
from the regular user, and be admin-only.
