I think moving to an evolt.org paid-for and managed server, run by the
sysadmin team, rather than one individual, will go a long way to
avoiding this in future. Instead of having one person entirely
responsible, we've got a group of people who can do these kinds of
tasks, thus avoiding all the 'under a bus' scenarios.
That said, I'm not sure we've got a general plan in place for backups,
and as you suggest, distributed ones are probably A Good Idea.
"How are we going to do this in the future" sounds like a good place to
hand it back to sysadmin to work out how best to do it.
