I can *vouch for* nginx with 4 or 5 daemonised php5-cgi processes
providing fastcgi.  I haven't used lighty.

The fastcgi part of the equation gets us some serious speed
optimisations for free if we install the APC cache module to PHP --
the PHP files stay in memory, byte-compiled, which dramatically cuts
down on both disk access and CPU usage.

Maybe we should try out Drupal's memcache module as well?
