He was thinking about the first rule of comedy: be offensive.

Of course, that's bound to anger some people rather than entertain them, but
if you've done your homework, it's a shoe-in for a given market. If your
market is young and progressive single women, perhaps jokes about rude or
stupid male behavior would go over very well (aka Ally McBeal). On the other
hand, if your market is the beer-drinking, shit-kicking, wanna-be cowboy
set...
