I think you are talking about the doctrine of Papal Infallibility.
They first invoked that one in the 20th century, and they only
have invoked it twice, IIRC.

Fundamentalists tend to say "The Bible says it, I believe it,
and that settles it", but they are very careful to decide which
verses they want to read.  If you point out to them that the 
Ten Commandments rule out adultery, not fornication, they 
get upset. If you ask them how many of each animal went
on board the ark, and then you look it up in Genesis, they
get more upset. When you ask them why they are clean
shaven, unlike Hassidic Jews and the Old Order Amish, 
who follow the biblical injunction against rounding the face, 
they start belching black smoke and dripping oil like a 
1973 Vega. 

I agree with the earlier assertion - most members of any 
given church are poorly informed or completely mistaken 
as to the fundamental doctrines of that church.

Not that there's anything wrong with that....
