Probably a bit late on this one sorry, but this could be your problem.
You might want to grab a memory tester and see what that tells you. I
have one here that you can install into lilo so your machine will boot up
straight into it:

Is the one I think.

As for mail clients, indeed Evolution is a damn good client, or for
another option you good look at Sylpheed.
