yes, true... did not think of that.  The risk is indeed great in
these professions, though the education level required is usually
lower than for teachers & social workers.

So it is worthwhile to note that putting one's body on the line is
also not well compensated.  Or not well enough, weighing cost against
benefit.

I come from a town where some of the best-paying jobs are/were timber
jobs.    But much of this is work that can get you injured or killed.
And then when there's work to be done, they run people overtime,
which leads to increased use of meth (let's be honest, meth use is
rampant in small towns and mill work) which increases chances of
accidents...

So now that the mills are dying, a highly sought after position is
prison guard, because prison guards started at a pretty damn good
salary (10-20k more than teachers) & the education required is
minimal.
