I don't think there's a correlation at all... here's a short list...

Michael Irvin, dumb as a stick, very successful, Terry Bradshaw, dumber than
a stick, VERY successful, Moses Malone, when asked for his prediction for
the Sixers chances in the playoffs, replied, "fo, fo, fo", meaning they were
going to sweep all four seven game series, he was close 12-1, but again not
very bright, but very successful in a team sport.

There definitely seems to be a correlation between how smart an athlete is
(in a team sport, anyway), and how successful he or she is, e.g., Wayne
Gretzky, Michael Jordan.
