this is as a followup to a conversation dean and michele and i were having
last night at the toronto beervolt (pics soon)

the context for the conversation (timely, i must admit) was "how does
someone become an evolt.org member?"

my point was that the "how" of becoming a member (priv=2) wasn't
important -- it's done by adjusting the priv level -- but rather, "who"

michele suggested that anybody who wants to become a member can become one
by, for example, providing a real name

we did not agree that a real name was necessary, but it may be sufficient
(remember "necessary and sufficient" from math?)

anyhow, the topic of authenticity is quite interesting, and timely -- a
number of weblogs are currently discussing it

the reason i bring it up here is not because it's "off topic" for any of our
