ah, but this one (which is the one I was thinking about, looking at the
fruit):

can be known as either.

So we have 2 species:
Carica papaya (known as the papaya or pawpaw)
Asima tribola (known as the pawpaw, which is the Arawakan name for papaya)
each of which can be called either.

Even more confusing than I thought...
