Not a new phenomenon, although that's an observation, not a complaint.

Ambrose Bierce defined a kilt as something worn overseas by Scots and
worn in Scotland by tourists.

My folks always commented that when you visited Florida on vacation,
people would drive 100 miles to see you, and treat you like long-lost
buddies, but the same people wouldn't bother to cross the street to say
hi when you were at home.  I think it's the same thing.
