Do the redirect on the server side. When someone requests
http://www.example.com just return http://example.com instead. And perhaps
I'm fuzzy on the technical details, and this can't be done without an extra
round trip.

As I recall, there's not a real technical reason, but conceptually, I like
to think of the root of a domain as just TLD and SLD. Anything before the
first dot should be a third level qualifier, in my mind. Also, I really am
lazy enough about typing that I hate the extra four characters.
