nope - tera, peta, exa, etc ARE the 1000th multiples - or (10^3)^x.
According to the SI, we should have been using these terms for 1024th
multiples ...

2^10 kibi
2^20 mebi
2^30 gibi
2^40 tebi
2^50 pebi
2^60 exbi

... these are derived from kilobinary, megabinary, gigabinary, etc. So you
should really be saying "Oh, I'm thinking of upgrading my workstation to 512
mebibytes RAM and perhaps bung in a couple of 160 gibibyte hard drives ... I
don't know if I should upgrade to a 2 gigahertz processor tho ..."

Notice my use of gigahertz (since that isn't 2048MHz ;)

Some are already using this system (with acronyms MiB, GiB, etc for
mebibytes, gibibytes, etc), some are deliberately NOT using it (saying that
gigabytes, terabytes, etc is de facto) ... have a look at
http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html for more info ...
