I don't know Aard's answer to this, but just for the record I thought
I'd chime in.

It's pretty common in the US for folks of any particular ancestry to
not speak a lick of the language their great grandfather's spoke. I,
for instance, am of Irish and Italian ancestry and I don't speak any
Gaelic.

My Italian (not learned until college) is pretty much limited to
getting served a meal in a restaurant, getting very drunk or getting
my face slapped.

Usually in that order.....

I love Italy.
