It makes for a longer language visually?

Compare a page of English (or German or Russian) to a page of Chinese (I've
always thought that Chinese has an visual elegance that other languages
just don't have).

Of course, non-alphabet-based languages just create speech problems.  More
monosyllabic characters means that you have to have a tonal system just to
accomodate all the words in your language.
