Yeah, there's *plenty* of research to show that Oral traditions retain
amounts of information which are truely frightening to those who haven't
been exposed to it and have to learn everything from writing.

Illiterate fiddlers who know (and know in a 'grok' sense too - there's a
fantastic song which goes along the lines of "You know all the words and
you sung all the notes, but you never quite learned the song") several
*thousand* tunes.
