I feel like I'm coming in a little late, but there are special visas
available for people coming to the US to start a company...or at
least there were. I just remembered an article in Wired or Fast
Company about some French guy (yeah, we even let French guys do this)
who was sleeping on his desk in Silicon Valley somewhere on such a
visa. The idea is that we promote entrepreneurship through this
program.

Seriously, Seb, Try that. Ask the embassy/consulate what the process
is for starting a company here. I think you get 6 months
automatically. Of course, things changed a lot last Sept, but you
should be fine - being from the UK and all. You can work, get
business rolling, and use our tax structures (which I believe are
better than yours there).
