Bain-marie
from the French from medieval Latin : balneum Mariae "bath of Mary", a
mistranslation of Medieval Greek - Kaminos Marias - Furnace of Mary,
after Mary, Sister of Moses and alleged Alchemist.
Whatever - its a device consisting of a large pan containing hot water,
into which smaler pans may bet set to cook slowly or keep warm.
