Two reasons: HTML email is two emails: your text email and another
HTML email, so you've got to download two to three times as much data
for the same content, and the second and by far the most important
reason is that many listservers still can't handle HTML mail and
produce digests full of raw HTML, which isn't the easiest thing to
read...!
