Which, ("Back in the Day" anyway), took roughly 5 minutes and cost exactly $1.
{Now to have your name actually appear on the ballot required gathering a
certain number of signatures from registered voters and submitting the
petition to the Board of Elections for verification. I don't remember if
there was a fee involved.)

Long answer: in some states we can't even write in a candidate unless the
write-in candidate is officially registered with the state's Board of
Elections.
