Yup.  The new Congress are sworn on 3d January ([1]). As noted, Thurmond
was born 5th December 1902. As well as the oldest, Thurmond is currently
the longest-serving Senator (ever -- over 46 years), and one of nearly 20
to serve more than 35 years. [2]

In fact, the Senate is modelled on Lords.  Since the US doesn't have a
peerage or a State church (<joke> just lots of State churches... </joke>),
Senators were originally appointed by elected by their state's Legislature
([3]), until the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified 1912 ([4]).
