better yet, ditch that stupid quick launch thingie

and by all means, always auto-hide the start bar

set up a shortcut for each app you really use a lot, and put that shortcut
on the start bar, so that it looks like this (ascii art):

Start
  A
  B
  D
  E
  etc.
-------
Programs
Documents
Settings
Search
Help
Run
-------
Shut Down

then, to launch your app, hit the windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) to
bring up the start bar, then hit the letter for the app

don't use P, D, S, C, H, R, U, as these are used by Programs, Documents,
etc., and although this technique still works, you will then need to hit
enter after, e.g. Windows>C>enter

by the way, i have my start bar on the left, so that it goes down the screen
as shown above

with the start bar at the bottom and auto-hide on, the mouse often brings it
up inadvertently while trying to click on the horizontal scrollbar
