 From the "Where did my marbles go?" department:

<quote>

In April, a professor of sociology, Professor Zheng Wu, at the University
of Victoria, completed a study on common-law relationships, published in
the Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology. According to this study,
cohabitation before marriage greatly increases the odds of divorce. Women
who have lived with a man out of wedlock are 80% more likely to eventually
divorce or separate than are women who have never had a live-in
relationship. Men who have been in a common-law union are 150% more likely
to experience marital breakdown.

To summarise, according to researcher Zheng Wu of the University of
Victoria, some reasons are:

* The couples may have qualms about marriage

* People who live together tend to be non-religious

* Individuals who co-habitate are generally liberal and unconventional and
are not inclined to stay together for the sake of children

* Living together promotes a casual attitude towards marriage

I found this quite funny.
