Mustangs were 'student models' -- which is why such an old one could 
be purchased by someone like me... a similar vintage strat or tele 
would be WAY out of my range.  With maybe a few late-era all-maple 
exceptions I think the necks were always maple/rosewood.

I love my fretboard, there is a very distinctive waterfall cascade 
look to it.  Hm I should take a closeup shot...
