#2 and #3 are surely true, and #1 *may* be true.

When a book is a flop, and the author doesn't earn 
enough in the way of royalties to pay back the 
advance, #2 would be true, but authors of 
successful books get a percentage of sales. Twice 
as many books, twice as high a cover price, it 
doesn't make any difference; it's twice the royalties 
either way 

She's probably getting 15% royalties. If they move 2 
million copies, that's $9 million in royalties. Is that 
*all* her income? Obviously not. But $9 is significant 
to ANYONE.
