If you liked Lain, you might want to look into Boogiepop Phantom as 
well.  If you can, though, you might want to try renting or borrowing 
it first because, while it's along the same lines, it's not for 
everyone.  But it has that same, kind of slow, wrap-around story that 
you have to piece together for yourself.
