I was looking into this only today, with regard to making my apple 
network wireless.
Apple makes very clear that it's airport systems are not upgradeable 
- the cards are a different shape and will only fit the machine for 
which they are intended. So my slightly older G4 Powerbook can never 
get Airport extreme, even if I buy the card.

Of course this does not actually answer your question about the PC 
laptop, but tread with caution!
